A bit of history

At the beginning of the XIX century in America appeared birds called Wyandotte. This name was given in honor of an Indian tribe because of the plumage, similar in color to the feathers worn by the Indians in their headdresses. For several decades, breeding of chickens took place, and in 1883 a new species of this breed appeared – Wyandotte silver and Wyandotte silver-bordered. To obtain silver chicken, it was necessary to cross 6 other species in order for gene splitting to occur. Thanks to its ancestors, Wyandotte is edged silver productive in terms of eggs, meat and rapid ripening.

The silver chickens of Wyandotte repeatedly changed their name. At first they were called Seabright, then they changed their name to Colombian, then Eckzelsior, etc. At the beginning of the 20th century, Wyandotte chickens were imported into Russia under their current name. Here the breed improved to add new diverse and unexpected colors, increase the quality of meat and egg productivity for several decades and finally the experimental result became positive. At the moment, the species of chickens of the Wyandotte breed has more than 15 varieties: White Wyandotte, Golden Wyandotte, Partridge, etc.

Short description

These small pestles are compact, inactive . They adapt well to cold, which makes birds even more popular. The viandot rooster has a medium-sized head neat and standard for individuals of this genus. Expressive beak with a pale yellow color. The scallop is light pink, small in size. The comb is different from the crest of other types. In the male Wyandotte, it is neat, small, symmetrical, and fits tightly to the head along the entire length, it has a large cone-shaped spike located closer to the back of the head and a standard pattern.

The peculiarity of the figure is the length of the body of which Wyandotte chickens are longer than the height of the bird. Because of this, the impression is that the feathered stocky and strong. The rooster has wide shoulders and the same back. The tail is magnificent and short.The majority of the color of the tail is black-edged golden, but sometimes partridge is golden. The legs are typical yellow. The colors of the feathers can be very diverse and vary depending on the manufacturer: from charcoal to blue tones, always bordered by darker shades. Wyandotte is a breed of chickens and its description can also be found on the Internet. In the photo you can see the small differences more carefully. Silver Wyandotte is the most popular breed. He got the name, due to its color, which seemed to ripple with sparkles. Silver goes white, bordered in black. The upper torso, head and wings are white. Each feather of the torso has a bordered black outline, as if drawn by a brush of a talented artist. Chickens of the silver Wyandotte breed differ from males in that the back of the body, starting with the abdomen, is black. Description of a possible culling:

  • a strong discrepancy between the appearance of the above;
  • a small chicken with an angular shape;
  • the bird is too round spherical and has short legs;
  • the body is narrow, with a narrow over short tail;
  • the absence of a spike on the crest or the shape is too sharp awl-shaped;
  • eyes are light;
  • the lobes have a white coating;
  • the color differs from that which exists in these Birds.

What are the advantages and disadvantages

As already mentioned, chicken has a high level of adaptability to almost any climate, which is beneficial for colder places and for hotter countries . Chicken Wyandotte purely silver-bordered has good egg laying, it also has the ability to lay eggs in the winter and summer during molting.

Young growth is productively hatched, without any difficulty almost every egg gives a strong, quick chicken. Wyandotte chickens have a high survival rate and resistance to various infections and diseases. Birds do not need to be kept separate from others, as they are not in conflict and easily get along with other species even the rooster of the Wyandotte breed. The meat and eggs are of excellent taste quality suitable for consumption in any form and for baking, as in birds, the dwarf mini Wyandotte.

If we talk about the negative sides of these birds, then the Wyandotte chickens are lazy, they have a sedentary lifestyle slight apathy. The high cost due to the rarity of this species is also one of the unpleasant moments. Obesity is a common chicken problem in which the egg production is almost gone.

Productivity

Mixed productivity consisting of egg production and meat production is an advantageous feature of the breed. The rapid and simultaneous maturation of chickens is beneficial for keeping chicks. After 6 months of their life, chickens begin to rush almost every day.The maximum weight of an adult rooster reaches 3.5 kg, when a female can weigh 2.5 kg. In the first year of keeping, a brood hen can give up to 200 eggs, but in subsequent years, egg productivity decreases slightly, by about 10%. Large eggs weigh more than 50 g, the color of which is yellow, sometimes brown.

In addition, there is a dwarf Wyandotte, bred by breeders from Germany and England. The weight of an adult chicken is a dwarf mini viandot of only 1 kg, an egg weighs 35 g and egg production is not large. The annual number of eggs of dwarf Wyandotte varies between 100-120 pieces. To ensure the continuation of the genus, it is necessary to keep a small herd then the eggs for brooding will be as fresh as possible. The dwarf species is considered unique and very rare; sometimes it can only be seen in elite wildlife sanctuaries and in private farms, therefore the price is much higher than that characteristic of other relatives.

Care and maintenance of chickens, proper nutrition

Due to its adaptation to cold places, chickens do not require special care, but for best productivity, especially egg, you need to follow a few rules. The chicken coop cannot be dark and cramped, birds should move freely on it, daylight should be in a large amount. If it is not possible to allow natural light , you can make artificial mixed light, that is, incandescent lamps plus fluorescent lamps.The number of hens per rooster cannot exceed 10 pieces. The best option is 8 or 9 layers.

Due to the large weight of the eggs, the nests and perches for the Wyandotte chickens should be kept low so that to avoid damage in the event of a fall, an ideal option would be their outdoor location. Wyandotte are susceptible to easy infectivity, therefore it is necessary to keep them separately from other species or carefully monitor the health of all birds. Information on problems that concern the Wyandotte chickens on the video can be found quite quickly.

To support rapid maturation, you need to monitor the nutrition of chickens. The diet should be full of carbohydrates and proteins. A boiled egg (protein) with semolina – food for chicks of several days of age. After a week, you can enter greens, meat, etc. After another 3 weeks, the young chicken can be transferred to adult food. It includes crops such as wheat, barley, corn. Adult bird should eat large amounts of food, but remember that the chicken is at risk of becoming obese, so do not abuse carbohydrates.If the chicken starts to gain excess weight too quickly, it is necessary to limit carbohydrates in the diet.

Poultry farming

It is quite difficult to get a purebred Wyandotte breed in our country, since such representatives are rare, especially among private traders. Usually, if the price is low, this is a hybrid. If you are lucky enough to become the owner of this valuable species, then you should not regret the purchase of financial resources for Wyandotte. Very soon they will pay off. The productivity of the chicks is high, the survival rate of young animals reaches almost 100%. Having turned into hens, laying hens show good care for young animals protecting them from possible dangers.

Reviews of these birds are more than positive, the best of this species is the partan type Wyandotte, whose roosters are juicy (golden turns into deep brown, and finally – into a blue-fringed tail), golden (excellent meat productivity ), silver and dwarf. On the Internet there are many video clips about this bird, where you can study in detail and select the breed of Wyandotte suitable for breeding, find a description of the breed as silver Wyandotte in the photo. If you have the opportunity to buy young animals, very soon you will see that the beauty of birds competes with their productivity.
