Lantana camara: colors of the Spanish flag – care

Lantana camara (Lantana camara, family Verbenovye) is a low shrub (up to 1 m in height) with branched shoots, which is native to the tropics of America. Lantana leaves are tough, gray-green, ovoid, about 5 cm long, with a high content of essential oils. From spring to autumn, lantana camara is strewn with pink-orange flowers, collected in inflorescences – umbrellas. However, hybrids with white and yellow corollas have been bred. In summer, Lantana prefers to be kept outdoors; it will be a wonderful decoration for a winter garden, terrace or patio in the Mediterranean style. With the help of pruning, lantana can be formed in the form of a compact bush or a standard tree.

Lantana is watered abundantly in summer and moderately in winter. After the buds appear, they begin to feed the plant with liquid fertilizer 2 – 3 times a month. Earlier fertilization is undesirable, it will lead to increased growth of shoots, but lanthanum will bloom weakly. Lantana is transplanted annually in early spring. A mixture of turf, leaf, humus soil and sand in a ratio of 2: 1: 1: 0,5 is prepared for transplantation. Adult specimens can be transplanted less often – once every 2 to 3 years. In the spring, shaping crown pruning is carried out.

Of the pests, lantana is affected by the spider mite and whitefly; to get rid of them, you need to sprinkle the plant with actellik, fufanon or karbofos. Spots of bacterial origin may appear on the leaves. Diseased leaves must be removed.
