What is a calf thorn

The cornea of the eyes of cows and calves, as well as other representatives of cattle (cattle) is an important element of their organ of vision. Occupying about 20% of the total area of the eyeball, this shell performs an important function of vision for protection against external irritants. In addition, it is the cornea of the eye that is responsible for the refraction of light rays. This department, which is important for vision, can undergo inflammatory processes.One of the most common diseases of this plan is the throat in calves and cows.

Belmo in a cow and calves

Causes of the appearance of an eyesore in cows

Belmo appears in the cow for various reasons. Cicatricial tissue is inflamed most often due to mechanical damage to the cornea of the eye. Any small particles can get into the eye of the calf or cow and damage the thin stratum corneum. In addition to injuries received from outside, this disease can also occur due to parasitic helminths. With such a pathology as telaziosis, worms attack the visual department of cattle. The eggs of these parasites penetrate the animal organism with the help of their main carriers – flies. For infection with teliasiosis, it is enough that the infected fly lands on the corner of the animal’s eye.

What else can cause inflammation of the cornea of the eye in cattle, you can ask your veterinarian.Sometimes, to establish the exact causes of this pathology, specialists take samples of the serous secretions of the animal for research, because only in this way you can choose the appropriate treatment methods.

Symptoms of the pathology

Whatever the cause of inflammation, the thorn that appeared in livestock, is easy to recognize. In the early stages of pathology, a calf or an adult cow has:

  • signs of profuse lacrimation;
  • photophobia;
  • conjunctivitis;
  • conjunctival hyperemia.

The eyelids become swollen, which leads to cover or to complete closure of the eye. Serous-purulent discharge is also observed. Most often, it is during this period that the cornea of the eye becomes cloudy in the cow. Both the stratum corneum and the blood vessels that are located inside the organs of vision become inflamed. Severe hyperemia leads to a protrusion of the eye, and a dark throat forms on its surface.

Features of treating an eyesore in cows

You can learn how to treat a cow’s eyesight at the vet. It should be addressed to him when the animal has signs of inflammation of the cornea of the eye. In order not to harm the health of cattle, it is not worth undertaking treatment without the help of specialists. But there are exceptions.

Some veterinarians advise breeders to use some traditional methods of therapy. One of these is powdered sugar treatment.For this you will need:

  • Take granulated sugar.
  • Grind it in a coffee grinder until it turns into powder. It is necessary to do this carefully so that no large coarse particles remain in the dusty mass.
  • Blow the resulting powder into the sore eye.

Some breeders recommend not to blow the powder, and lay it under the lower eyelid.

The procedure should be done 3-4 times a day. According to the opinions of experienced livestock breeders, a calf or cow will have an eyesore in 5 days. Specialists confirm this only partially. Quick recovery is not possible due to extensive hyperemia of the eye. For several days of therapy, only the clouded area itself dims, but the cornea remains covered with erosion and ulcers. Even with the most effective treatment, cattle will recover for at least 1 month.

Medication treatment

Treatment of cattle eyesore will be most effective in the treatment of veterinary drugs. If the cause of the pathology is helminthiasis, the veterinarian should prescribe antiparasitic treatment. Only after it, the cow thorn should be treated with local medicines. The most effective are the following:

  • one percent chlorofos solution;
  • tetracycline ointment;
  • lotions from dandelion infusions.

A solution of chlorophos is instilled into 3-4 ml of the affected eyes.Treatment will be most effective if, in addition to washing, lubricate the eyelids of cows or calves with tetracycline ointment 2 times a day. You won’t have to think about where to put the remnants of the ointment, since the thorn rarely disappears in a few days. A cow should be treated under the close supervision of a veterinarian, strictly complying with all its requirements and instructions.

How to protect cows and calves from disease?

It is not difficult to treat cows from a thirst, but therapy is long, which brings its inconvenience to both sick cattle and their owner. To prevent such problems, it is necessary to use the prevention of thorn. Routine daily examinations of the livestock will help to identify a sick cow in a timely manner and isolate it from the rest of the herd, because if, in addition to the squirrel, the sick cattle have signs of infectious conjunctivitis, the pathology can also be transferred to other cows.

Livestock breeders should also carefully clean the main place of livestock keeping and walking from prickly objects, even if there is half-eaten food in the barn, it should be cleaned. to cope with the attack of vectors of teliasiosis – insects, so timely disposal of half-eaten food is so important.

It is equally important to conduct regular scheduled examinations of animals and their vaccination by specialists. Sometimes such measures help to reveal blurred eyes in the early stages of occurrence, which is important for the speed and effectiveness of follow-up therapy.
