Significance for agriculture

Due to the high yield of juicy green leaves, the honey plant chives are widely used in cooking. It is also grown on the farm as an ornamental plant – it can be placed on the windowsill in the house and planted in summer cottages.

And in agriculture, it is used to combat pests that destroy carrot seeds. To do this, chives are planted near future carrot beds.

Distribution

This plant is cultivated throughout the northern hemisphere, including the Arctic. Found in China, Eastern Siberia, Mongolia.

Chisel is frost-resistant. At a temperature of -10 degrees, it does not lose its fertility. Housewives can cut juicy onion feathers until mid-December. Unfortunately, this plant is not popular in our European regions.

Cultivated varieties:

  • bohemia;
  • Prague;
  • the wind;
  • Khibiny;
  • Siberian;
  • raw material;
  • Moscow early maturing.

Agrotechnics

The structural features of the root system make it possible to grow this perennial greenery in large quantities. To do this, select areas with moderate humidity and sow seeds in early spring or late autumn.

Embedding depth 2-2,5 centimeters. The row spacing is 30-35 centimeters. The plant does not tolerate droughts! Watering should be regular, but not excessive.

Lime and manure are used as fertilizers – they are applied in the fall when preparing a site for plowing or digging. After planting, the soil is mulched in the aisles – sawdust or peat are scattered here.

When grown from seed, chives bloom in the second year after planting. It is important not to cut the leaves and flowers during this period to obtain a good seed base.

For a couple of years, the plant branches out strongly, and its feathers become thinner. To avoid this, every two years it is necessary to thin out the onions in the sowing rows – the optimal distance between the bulbs is 6-7 centimeters.

In one place it grows up to four years.

Growing in the house

For growing at home, greens are dug up in the fall and placed in the refrigerator. At a temperature of +4, the plant is in hibernation – it is resting and gaining strength.

In winter, these seedlings are planted in containers and placed on the windowsills of the house on the sunny side.

Honey productivity

Schnitt flowers are purple in different shades. The flowering period is only 20 days.

A distinctive feature of this culture is pollen sterility. When breeding, this quality is necessary to obtain non-viable pollen.

When pollinating, it is important that male pollen gets on the flowers of mother plants. And the bees do an excellent job of this! Throughout the summer day, they actively collect nectar, which contains a high percentage of sugar.

About 100 kilograms of honey can be obtained from one hectare.

The resulting product is light, low-translucent and thick, with a slight greenish tinge. The onion flavor disappears when the honey ripens. Crystallizes slowly, gradually turning into a fine-grained mass.

Such honey is ideal for feeding bee colonies during the winter.

Useful Properties

In terms of the high content of vitamins and minerals, schnitta nectar surpasses other species of its family!

Honey can be used:

  • for the prevention of atherosclerosis;
  • to regulate the digestive process in case of its violation;
  • for the treatment of high blood pressure:
  • for general strengthening of the body.

In folk medicine, the plant is recommended for the prevention of cancer.

It is not recommended for people with allergies to consume this type of honey without preliminary testing!
