Sawdust as a substrate for growing plants – Hydroponics

Sawdust as a substrate to some extent justify itself in mixtures and less often in pure form. This should be hardwood sawdust compost to avoid phytotoxicity. It is a light medium with a low density (about 150 g / l) with a high air porosity ratio, but very low moisture holding capacity and requires frequent irrigation, especially in hot climates. Sawdust has a pH approaching neutral and very low conductivity. Sawdust requires a nitrogen-rich nutrient solution as it tends to trap this element. If you live in an area where you can get compost sawdust, then they will be useful when mixed with a wetter substrate. Sawdust and coconut have the common advantage that they are organic and therefore beneficial to microorganisms.
