Distribution

The grass grows poorly and does not bloom under a dense canopy of trees, but it is often found in the wild among sparse deciduous forests, where it feels great. He willingly occupies clearings and burnt-out areas, meadows, forest edges and wastelands.

In the European part, it is widespread. It grows in the southern Siberian regions up to Lake Baikal, as well as in the North Caucasus.

Significance for agriculture

Sleepy is not only an excellent melliferous plant, but also a fodder crop. Due to its high fiber and protein content, it is used in rabbit breeding. Cattle and small ruminants eat grass less readily due to their specific smell. Good silage is obtained from this culture, which is steamed for feed to pigs.

The plant contains calcium, carotenes and a high dose of vitamin C. Therefore, young shoots are used by culinary experts to prepare salads, borscht, and other first courses. The roots are pickled and served with a side dish. Dry leaves are used as a fragrant seasoning.

Traditional medicine includes parts of the plant in their recipes that help with a variety of ailments. For example, with its help they fight scurvy, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, disorders in the functioning of the kidneys, liver, and stomach.

Description

schematic representationThe common willow is a grass, branched in the upper part, up to one meter high. Large leaves are grouped on elongated cuttings. From above they are smooth, and from below they are covered with a delicate downy.

The peculiarity of the honey plant is a creeping root located in the ground in a horizontal plane.

The flowers are inconspicuous – small, white, collected in umbellate inflorescences. Fruits in the form of a flat brown two-seed are formed only at the top, and the lateral umbrellas are sterile.

Flowering takes up to 30 days. It starts in May and lasts until the beginning of July. The nectar attracts bees all day long. But the peak of its release falls on the period from 11 to 15 hours, when the maximum activity of pollinating insects is observed.

Honey productivity

The productivity of grass as a melliferous plant directly depends on the density of the thickets.

The continuous herbage provides from 200 to 240 kg of marketable honey from each hectare. With strong shading, the bribes may be lower. And in a dense forest, it does not bloom at all.

If the weather is warm and humid, the control hive brings up to 3-4 kilograms of fresh nectar per day. This is a high quality commercial honey with a yellowish-green hue and a pleasant taste.

In those years when the willow tea does not bloom, it is successfully replaced by a flowering willow by a bribe. This feature is typical for Siberia.
