UV Filter / Sterilizer – Hydroponics

UV

UV filter (or sterilizer), today, is an extremely effective tool used by many in the fight against harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and algae. The nutrient solution passes through a chamber in which it is exposed to UV radiation.

This filter can be borrowed from aquarists. The filter does not remove pollutants, but only affects living organisms and must be used to control pathogens.

The filter has disadvantages from a hydroponic standpoint. In order for the UV filter to have a sufficient effect on pathogens, the flow rate of the solution must be slower than the rate that is optimal for oxygenation. In addition, uv rays decompose metal chelates.

UV radiation is not selective: it kills all living organisms, both pathogens and microorganisms beneficial to plants.

Considering the disadvantages, it is a good idea to use UV filters to treat the water before adding nutrients to it and supplying it to the plants.
