It is believed that the “evolution” of flowering begonias is significantly inferior to the decorative deciduous varieties. If in flowering indoor begonias they mainly change color variations and improve endurance, then in the process of creating more and more varieties of deciduous beauties, breeders have long surpassed, it would seem, any expectations. Different textures, effects, colors, pattern variations are complemented by the ability to choose the size and shape of the leaves. And sometimes it seems that new varieties appear every day. Begonias can be selected not just to your liking, but also for the interior, textiles and even accessories. And although the old varieties are still in demand, it was fashionable innovations that brought begonias back to their peak of popularity.
Among the flowering begonias, hybrid varieties can boast of the greatest variability. tuberous begonias (Begonia x tuberhybrida). Among them, you can sometimes find the most unexpected color variations. But deciduous begonias are dominated by hybrids. begonias rex (Begonia rex), which often appear in catalogs and at exhibitions as varieties of unknown origin, in which purely decorative characteristics are considered the main ones.

10 best flowering begonias
‘Party Dress’ variety tuberous begonias (Begonia x tuberhybrida) – one of the most spectacular begonias with a dazzling fiery color. Large double inflorescences surprise not only with color transitions or the number of petals, but also with their structure. Against the background of standard low bushes (about 30 cm), this hybrid variety forms dense inflorescences of seemingly waxy flowers with an unevenly ruffled edge. The outer petals are wider, their size decreases towards the center of the flower, but the cruciform structure is more clearly manifested.
Although each petal is different, the begonia flower appears symmetrical. But the main feature of this variety is still considered to be the color. Bright, apricot-orange, with the thinnest red stripe along the edge, which is softly “blurred” along the contour of the petal, but still leaves a feeling of contrast, it fascinates with the play of juicy and warm shades.

Begonia Variety ‘Picotee Yellow-Red’ also has a two-tone color, but completely different in character. This is one of the most compact and lush varieties of begonias, in which the feeling of massiveness and density of bushes with a height of 25 to 35 cm is achieved due to shortened peduncles. Flowers up to 9 cm in diameter are strikingly large and densely double, neat and rustic-elegant. The obovate petals of a begonia with an almost straight edge seem especially unusual due to the combination of a melon-apricot tone with a dark red colored edge. The flowers are so densely arranged on the bush that they merge into a single variegated spot. Cold and bright color of greenery and “fruit” flowers look inimitable.
‘Camellia’ Is a variety of tuberous begonias, the name of which speaks for itself. The unique shape of the petals and the dense doubleness really make the flowers of this variety look like genuine camellias. The height of the bushes up to 30 cm and medium-sized leaves further emphasize the size of the huge flowers, the diameter of which may even exceed 10 cm.But special attention should be paid to the color of the begonias – the white edge of the petals in uneven spots turns into a rich dark pink base. And from this watercolor, the elegant classic shape of the flowers looks even more spectacular.

‘Marmorata’ – a variety of begonia, very similar to “Camellia”, but different from it in color. If the shape of the bush, the leaves, and the flower itself are practically similar, then the color of Marmorata is the opposite: the red edge of the petals continues on a snow-white base with irregular strokes. It is thanks to the motley ripples that the flowers of this begonia variety are often compared to carnations – such a pattern is usually characteristic of the latter.

‘Samba’ (or “Samba Mix”) is a variety mixture of terry large-flowered begonia, which can boast two unique features at once. Firstly, thanks to the “ruffles” along the edge, the flowers of the plant are very similar to elegant carnations. And, secondly, the color of the flowers is uneven – from white and light pink to orange, almost yellow, cream and dazzling pink. The shades are almost always unique, pastel and fancy candy. The begonia flowers seem to be very large, they really reach 9 cm in diameter. The bushes branch densely, neat in appearance, and thanks to the shortened peduncles, the flowers literally sit on the leaves.

Variety “Alkor F1” – a hybrid ampelous variety of tuberous begonia, the flowers of which are more reminiscent of typical inhabitants of the tropical jungle. This is a magnificent plant, able to reach a height of 40 cm and is distinguished by quite dense greenery. But unlike other ampelous begonias, the flowers are not buried in the leaves at all, since they bloom in such an amount that they cover the bushes with a continuous blanket. Large, up to 8 cm in diameter, drooping and graceful, they captivate with details and asymmetry.
The upper outer petal of the begonia is colored candy red. The lower outer petals are almost white with bright pink strokes. And the graceful center flaunts with several different shades of pink and orange and smaller petals. It is a tropical star that can outshine any bulbous exotic.
“Olomouc” – an exclusive hybrid of Begonia semperflorens. In height, the variety is limited to only 20 cm, and the flowers in diameter will not exceed 3 cm. Adding a pure white color to this, you can get a completely “boring” picture. Meanwhile, this begonia is one of the most fashionable and original. It’s all about its dazzlingly bright foliage and a compact, dense bush of an ideal shape, which can be appreciated even during a snow-like bloom.
The flowers are extraordinarily showy and appear to be artificial. The rounded petals curve like the brim of a hat or paper fans, surprising them with the purity of their lines no less than their radiant color. A lush “ball” of orange stamens in the center turns begonia flowers into a small miracle. This is a unique plant that blooms earlier than other varieties and delights with relentless flowering until the very frost. The ability to self-purify is also an important quality.

All the advantages of “Olomouc” are also characteristic of one more domestic begonia variety – «Лученец»… True, its flowers do not make the same “paper” impression, the petals seem to be more delicate and quivering. And the transition from a large bright pink border to a snow-white tone on the two large central petals of begonia in combination with a lemon fluffy center resembles the spring flowering of apple trees. It feels fresh, romantic and surprisingly pastoral.
‘Splendide Ballerina’ – Begonia variety for those who love watercolor transitions, multicolor variations and a combination of thousands of shades in one plant. Compact bushes up to 25 cm high with slightly reddish nondescript greenery are completely invisible under drooping inflorescences with very large flowers. The diameter of begonia flowers even on one bush varies from graceful five-centimeter flowers to larger ones, with a diameter of about 9 cm. Densely double, somewhat sloppy in shape, flowers adorn with all shades of salmon, pink, oil-yellow, peach, apricot, fawn, with transitions and variations in tones characteristic both for individual flowers and for the bush as a whole.

Begonia Variety ‘Funky Pink’ appeared on the market only last year, but has already won the hearts of flower growers all over the world. This plant flaunts a new flower shape, reminiscent of a drooping chamomile with its narrow petals and uneven terry. Bright yellow stamens, thin pink pedicels, grace and a dazzling acrylic tone of pink immediately draw attention to this begonia. But it is also worth paying attention to the very beautiful pointed leaves, and to the increased strength of the shoots, and to the splendor of this ampelous novelty.

10 best leafy begonias
Сорт ‘Jurassic Watermelon’ begonias rex (Begonia rex) looks like a bizarre creature from among the ancient relics. The combination of unique shades of color and patterns, shape and pattern on the leaves make this begonia not only original, but unique. A large snail at the base of the leaves seems to flow into the “tail” – the elongated tip of the leaf, somewhat reminiscent of the tail of reptiles. The color only emphasizes this effect: the watermelon-pink spot in the center almost exactly repeats the shape of the leaf and, as it were, brings the illusion to perfection.
Under the pink spot and against the bright green background of the rest of the leaf plate, silver-white drops are visible, which seem to be frozen paint or dew drops and literally glow. But this is not all the surprises of this begonia: a densely ruffled carved edge with a unique blueberry-lilac color is combined with a dark irregularly diverging spot at the center of the snail. Begonia leaves bloom so densely that the petioles and stems are almost impossible to see. This is a fairly large bush, even at a young age, seemingly massive.

‘Shamus’ Is a Rex variety with a classic combination of vibrant greens and purples, but still manages to look irresistibly original. It’s all about the motley ripples of patterns and deeply dissected leaves, the shape of which is difficult to see behind the play of contrasting ornaments. The begonia bushes themselves, although medium in size, look very impressive, almost spherical due to the tiered arrangement of the leaves. The leaf is spiral, with an arcuate notch at the base, bright green, the veins are light. The ripple effect on begonia leaves creates a lacy, chaotic pattern of almost black spots that are parallel to the edges of the leaf and create an ornamental effect.

“Talking bird” Is a unique, medium-sized begonia that looks as radiant as precious orchids. The leaves are elongated, medium-sized, but due to the strong bushiness, the plant seems to be very lush. The smooth edge with neat teeth emphasizes the play of colors. The leaves of this white-pink beauty seem pearlescent and literally shine. This effect is achieved not only due to the white-silver color of the begonia’s leaf plates, but also to the chaotic, cobweb-like patterns: cherry and pink veins diverge along the veins in small strokes, lace, forming an amazing texture.

Бегония ‘Casey Corwin’, a magnificent variety of Begonia rex, seems royal and almost artificial. In favorable conditions, this variety has practically no green color, and the play of shape, color and detail turns the leaf into a small living jewel. Oval, with a strongly elongated tip, medium-sized leaves of this variety are distinguished by a weakly pronounced snail at the base of the begonia leaf and a strongly indented jagged asymmetric edge, which gives the plant a semblance of lace.
The carved edge is beautifully emphasized by the play of colors. Silvery, almost white velvet spots most often cover the entire surface, combined with a beet-raspberry-heart spot in the middle of the leaf, with slightly darker thin veins and the same beet, uneven, but very thin border, which seems to highlight the teeth at the edge. Red pubescent begonia cuttings only emphasize the play of silver and beetroot tones. And in terms of the density and splendor of the bushes, this variety is also inimitable.

У begonias ‘Garden Angel Blush’ deeply dissected leaves really resemble the wings of angels. If the presence of green in the color of the previous variety directly depends on the growth conditions and, although it is still rare, it does occur, then this begonia is visually devoid of it. It is a silver-pink miracle, airy, lacy and inimitable spectacular. The shape of the leaves is somewhat reminiscent of maples, thanks to the deep dissection of the leaf plate and the sharpness of the tips of the lobes.
Even more their unusualness in the leaves is emphasized by dark green or dark purple veins resembling vessels. Young bright pink begonia leaves fade over time and are recoloured into living silver, and the transformation of the color is heterogeneous and no less beautiful than both basic color options. These plants are large, catchy, voluminous.

‘Peter Piper’ – a variety that from afar can be mistaken for a bouquet of dry autumn leaves. The thing is that among indoor decorative deciduous begonias you can no longer find varieties with such a wealth of orange-red-brown shades. It is a compact variety with rounded-kidney-shaped leaves, with a strongly wavy surface and “soft” teeth along the edge. The reverse scarlet-purple side of the leaves is visible on the bends, further emphasizing the color of the upper side of the leaf plates.
Orange-brick, terracotta, various shades of brown in watercolor diverge along the begonia’s leaf plate, emphasized only by slightly darker reddish veins. Usually at the very base of the leaf, at the cutting, a light yellow spot is found. The silvery, luminous edge makes all color shades shine in a new way.
‘Dress Code’ – an exclusive and still rare, but surprisingly pure both in the form of the leaf and in the color of the begonia variety. Few plants come so close to the monochrome color of the leaves than this beauty. Medium-sized begonia captivates not by the quantity, but by the beauty of large leaves of an ideal oval shape with a slightly pointed tip and an almost solid edge. The leaves are light, almost white, as if sprinkled with light powder. The austere inky black border and a dark spot in the center of the begonia leaves a stunning contrast to the base color. The powdering effect is enhanced by small light peas along the border, which can only be appreciated up close. It is an unusually catchy variety that looks very modern.
У varieties “White Suede” the leaves are only slightly darker (light pistachio, almost whitish), but the nature of this begonia is completely different. Medium-sized begonia produces not so large leaves with an inconspicuous snail at the base. The shiny, suede leaves of the begonia seem delicate. And this effect is only emphasized by the white veins, which can only be seen up close, as well as the chaotic, all consisting of small dark red strokes and specks, openwork border along the edge of the sheet. In the center, dark spots of a dark marsh color also diverge unevenly along the veins.

“Black Swan” – a unique hybrid of begonias even against the background of other varieties, almost black in color. It’s all about large leaves of an unusual shape, which bend and bend, resembling the silhouettes of these graceful birds. Despite the very large leaves, this begonia has medium-sized bushes. They are graceful and elegantly unusual. The smooth edge of the foliage is compensated by the waviness and curvature of the leaf plate. The bright red cuttings wonderfully emphasize the beauty of the glossy inky reddish color, and the translucent silvery spots, unevenly scattered between the veins, emphasize the ebb tone and make the leaves more noble. It is a light-loving variety, the leaves of which are not similar to any other begonias.
Begonia decorative and molten ‘Purple Snow’
‘Purple Snow’ – Another variety of begonias with very large leaves, which cause associations with maples and chestnuts. This large size became famous for its very modest size of the bush: the plant does not release so many leaves and still remains graceful. Each leaf is rounded, with a beautiful jagged edge, a shallow dissection into lobes and a wavy surface. The large size of the leaf is emphasized by a double snail at the base. The silvery-green color is combined with burgundy veins and the edge of the leaf, and the spots look like “sprinkles”, consist of the finest fragments. This begonia really looks like it was covered in burgundy snow and is one of the most regal varieties of decorative leafy begonias.
